ao
Work Plan/Performance Measures
4-The critical role of research in botanical gardens and universities for solving modern problems and
increasing quality of human life
The North Carolina Botanical Garden (NCBG), part of The University of North Carolina -Chapel
Hill, is a boo-acre center for research, conservation and interpretation of plants with special
emphasis on plants native to the southeastern United States and horticultural plants having
traditional uses or special botanical interest. It is located near an established neighborhood adjacent
to an urban area consisting of a major university campus, major hospital and Town of Chapel Hill.
NCBG's focus on environmental protection is demonstrated by its immense project of propagating,
growing and collecting native plants as part of its public education program, which encourages
leaving native and propagated plant environments undisturbed. Special services include regular
educational tours and Horticultural Therapy for all ages or impairments,
The Garden enjoys approximately 80,000 visitors annually--researchers, students from around the
world, visitors-young and old.. ro,ooo take the tours. For these reasons, it needs to present an
educational and environmental friendly setting that will appeal to its visitors and their expectations
and needs. If there were no volunteers assisting the Garden, it would not be able to maintain its
current level of educational programming, appearance, environmental and weekend operating hours
and tours, According to NCBG reports, all areas are open ~ days a week, year-round only because of
the volunteers. (North Carolina Botanical Garden)
Part 2: Action Plan
RSVP volunteers will work in a variety of capacities from direct service with visitors and staff to
behind the scenes. Not all volunteers will serve weeldy or have people contact. Some volunteers will:
--Maintain flower beds, nature trails, herb gardens or work on plant sales: r hour weeldy
--Greet the public from local and long distance areas, direct visitors to areas of interest: 4 hour shifts
weekly
Page 27
