~~ <br />Work Plan/Performance Measures <br />County School District elementary schools to increase the reading and math literacy skills of teacher- <br />identified elementary school children, thereby increasing student performance. According to the NC <br />Dept of Public Instruction, there is an indicator that children who don't read by third grade have a <br />propensity to drop out of school later with the highest dropouts occurring in 9th grade, OCS is one of <br />two school districts in this county. It is a rural district in northern Orange County near Hillsborough <br />(pop, approx, 5000) and a total elementary enrollment for 2oo4-zoos of 3034 with an average 433 <br />students per school. <br />Part 2: Action Plan _ <br />Volunteers provide x:r or small group assistance with reading or math literacy skills during which <br />they may assist up to 4 students, Volunteers will serve an average of 4 students in need of reading or <br />math literacy skills assistance, Volunteers will tutor approximately zo minutes per child. Volunteers <br />tutor an average of 2 hours per week over a zo-week period during the school year. <br />Annually 20 volunteers will serve a total of 80o service hours for the school year (4o hrs x 20 wks), <br />OCS provides: x.Approx. x-hour orientation per volunteer <br />z,Reading Recovery teacher-trainer to develop curriculum and a 2-hour formal training and the <br />initial resource materials twice a year. (Volunteers entering the program between training sessions <br />will receive training on-site from their assigned school.) <br />3.A small stipend for the teacher-trainer from OCS. <br />RSVP will provide a tutor tool lcit, name badge, vest and special recognition & feedback session, <br />background checks on tutors and RSVP Senior Education Corps project coordinator will coordinate <br />this program (recruit, orient, place, monitor; recognize volunteers, monitor costs), work with OCS <br />school-RSVP liaisons to match volunteers, address communication and resource needs at approx.. x4 <br />hours per week, <br />Page 24 <br />
