15 <br />Work Plan/Performance Measures <br />one-to-one basis twice a week Based on Chapel Hill-Carrboro School District reports, a need exists <br />in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School District (CHCCS) to help improve the literacy skills of students in <br />pre-R to 2nd grade. CHCCS Volunteers & Partners for Education Office has developed and <br />administers a Reading Partners Program to help meet that need., <br />Of the estimated z5oo Pre-IC to 2nd graders in CHCCS (o4-os school year), an average 29o students <br />are served by its Reading Partners Program. <br />Part 2: Action Plan <br />RSVP volunteers will serve as reading and literacy tutors for pre-IC-z students in any of the CHCCS <br />district's 9 elementary schools of their choice. The program asks that volunteers serve z hours <br />weeldy for ro weeks and tutor 2 different students t:r. <br />Volunteers will tutor using the Book in a Bag program, made up of tutoring activities designed by <br />teachers to supplement classroom teaching. Volunteers arrive and pick up their tutoring "bag" to go. <br />Literacy skills would include letter and word recognition, sounds, consonant cluster sounds, and <br />reading proficiency. (9 CHCCS elementary schools) <br />Annually z5 volunteers may serve approximately 50o hours over 20 weeks (25 hrs per week x zo <br />wks). RSVP will recruit and refer volunteers to the CHCCS Volunteer office, devoting approximately <br />t hour per week to the program, 25 RSVP volunteers will serve a total of z5 hours per week, and <br />each will serve a minimum of z children weeldy in one r-hour session during a ro-week session. <br />RSVP benefit package and recognition apply. CHCCS wfll provide: (r) a 4-hour formal training to <br />new volunteers at the beginning of each ro-week session; (2) a refresher course to returning <br />volunteers; (S) site managers (4) volunteer assistant site managers who update materials and <br />monitor volunteers; (5) materials and assembly of the Book in a Bag curriculum; (6) recognition ('7) <br />r part-time staff to match teacher-selected students with volunteers. <br />Page 22 <br />
