9 <br /> 1 Commissioner Jacobs acknowledged the commitment of the agricultural community to <br /> 2 Orange County. <br /> 3 <br /> 4 A motion was made by Commissioner Jacobs, seconded by Commissioner Price for the <br /> 5 Board to certify the ten (10)farm properties noted above totaling 470 acres (VAD) and 91 acres <br /> 6 (EVAD) (rounded acreage) as denoted in the attached documentation as qualifying farmland; <br /> 7 designate the farms as noted above as Voluntary or Enhanced Voluntary Agricultural District <br /> 8 farm within the Caldwell, Cane Creek/Buckhorn, Schley/Eno, Cedar Grove, and White Cross <br /> 9 Voluntary Agricultural Districts; and enroll the lands in the Orange County Voluntary Agricultural <br /> 10 District (VAD) and the Enhanced Voluntary Agricultural District (EVAD) programs. <br /> 11 (Note: Two parcels are updating new ownership and therefore approximately 86 acres will not <br /> 12 be an increase in the overall acres of the program.) <br /> 13 <br /> 14 With approval of these additional acres, the Orange County Voluntary Agricultural District <br /> 15 Program will have enrolled 86 farms totaling 9,701 acres in the VAD and 2,234 acres in the <br /> 16 EVAD fora total of 11,935 acres (rounded) in the program. <br /> 17 <br /> 18 VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br /> 19 <br /> 20 c. Addition to the Agenda: <br /> 21 The Board will consider adopting a "Resolution of Commitment to Adopt, Honor <br /> 22 and Uphold the Paris Climate Agreement. <br /> 23 <br /> 24 Commissioner Rich said she decided to propose this resolution after having <br /> 25 conversations with all three of the Town's Mayors. <br /> 26 Commissioner Rich read the resolution: <br /> 27 <br /> 28 ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> 29 RESOLUTION OF COMMITMENT TO ADOPT, HONOR AND UPHOLD THE PARIS CLIMATE <br /> 30 AGREEMENT <br /> 31 <br /> 32 Resolution of Commitment to Adopt/Honor and Uphold the Paris Climate Agreement– and she <br /> 33 said this came about after her discussions with the three Town's mayors. <br /> 34 <br /> 35 RESOLUTION #2017-042 <br /> 36 ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> 37 RESOLUTION OF COMMITMENT TO ADOPT, HONOR AND UPHOLD THE PARIS CLIMATE <br /> 38 AGREEMENT <br /> 39 <br /> 40 WHEREAS, the scientific community has reached an overwhelming consensus that the earth's <br /> 41 climate is warming and human activity—specifically, burning fossil fuels that emit carbon dioxide <br /> 42 and other greenhouse gases—is the primary cause of warming; and <br /> 43 <br /> 44 WHEREAS, large coastal states such as North Carolina are disproportionately vulnerable to the <br /> 45 effects of climate change, including extreme heat, severe storms, and sea level rise; and <br /> 46 <br /> 47 WHEREAS, reducing carbon emissions will help protect Orange County, North Carolina, <br /> 48 residents and future generations—particularly those who are most economically and physically <br /> 49 vulnerable—and mitigate the consequences of extreme weather that hurt the economy; and <br /> 50 <br />
