Proclamation <br />II, "Official for a Day" Agenda <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Sharron Hinton, 245-2300 <br />PURPOSE: To proclaim the week of April 23-29, 2006 as Orange County Government Week <br />and endorse the "Official for a Day" activities,. <br />BACKGROUND: The National Association of Counties and the North Carolina Association of <br />County Commissioners encourage local governments to celebrate County Government Week in <br />an effort to educate citizens about county government, A proclamation to acknowledge the <br />week of April 23 -29, 2006 as Orange County Government Week is provided as Attachment I. <br />This year marks the sixteenth year that Orange County has celebrated County Government <br />Week by sponsoring the "Official for a Day" Program. Due to scheduling conflicts, this year's <br />program will take place on Wednesday, April 19, 2006 - prior to the actual national recognition, <br />On this day students from the area high schools are partnered with department heads and <br />management staff during the morning to gain an understanding of county government <br />operations, After the mentoring, a mock board of county commissioners' meeting is held <br />whereupon students address issues often presented to the Board, This exercise provides them <br />with an overview of the legislative process. An agenda for the day is provided as Attachment II, <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: None <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board adopts the proclamation <br />and endorses the planned event. <br />
