13
XDS Guarantee of Evidence Based Best Practice Approach
Crass Disability Services has demonstrated a commitment to outcome focused
services since XDS was created in 1996 when Thava Mahadevan became the
Director of what was then called the Thomas S. Program. Because the Thomas
S. Program was created in response to a Federal Class Action Law Suit against
the State for not providing adequate treatment to individuals with mental
retardation and mental illness(es) there was a wealth of evidence based, best
practice training required for Cross Disability Staff.
XDS Staff have received the following training:
• Psychopharmacology. -
• Circle of Friends Supports.
• Social role valorization.
• Value based caregiving.
• Legal and ethical issues in working with individuals with DD.
• Person centered planning with on-site fallow-up by national consultant
Michael Smull (this included individual-speck person centered planning for
CDS clients and clients preparing to leave John Umstead Hospital.
• Person centered plan monitoring by Thomas S. Program consultants within
the NC Division of MH/DD/SAS.
National Accreditation:
It is within this culture of person-centered treatment and support interventions
that XDS pursued national accreditation from The Council on Quality and
Leadership in Supports to People with Disabilities. CQL Accreditation is a
long, "developmental process that is designed to ensure a service organization
maintains a person centered focus by requiring a quality management process
that systematically collects and analyzes data toward improving quality of
services," The centerpiece of CQL accreditation is evaluating the strength of the
person centered planning process and services and ensuring positive outcomes.
CQL reviews programs in a highly detailed fashion through a series of interviews
with service recipients and providers to determine if certain outcomes are
present. If outcomes are not present, it is determined whether processes are in
place to ensure their presence in the future.
XDS Inc.
Cross Disability Services. Page 23
