ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: March 21, 2006 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. 5°~ <br />SUBJECT: Contract with Orange County Speedway -Sheriff's Office <br />DEPARTMENT: Sheriff <br />ATTACHMENT(S): <br />Contract <br />PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Sheriff Lindy Pendergrass, 245-2900 <br />PURPOSE: To approve a contract with the Orange County Raceway (OCR), Inc, to provide law <br />enforcement coverage at events and races at the Orange County Speedway during 2006, <br />BACKGROUND: For many years, Orange County has contracted with the owners of the <br />Orange County Speedway to provide law enforcement coverage/service at races and related <br />events. In 2005, the property underwent a change of ownership. Mr. Vance Agee was <br />introduced by the Economic Development Director at the October 1 S, 2005 Board of <br />Commissioners meeting as the new partner/Operations Manager of the Orange County <br />Speedway, <br />Mr, Agee has been meeting with the County Fire Marshal, Building Inspector, Emergency <br />Management Director and the Orange County Sheriffs Office to ensure that his facility will meet <br />the safety requirements of the North Carolina statues governing this type of operation. Mr, <br />Agee has committed to the fallowing requirements and has expended time, funding and energy <br />in preparing the race season, There are approximately 20 races scheduled for the 2006 <br />season, The coverage staff consists of four Orange County Deputy Sheriffs and four Sheriffs <br />vehicles. <br />The charge rates for this coverage are based on actual overtime casts. The charges are $30 <br />per hour far each deputy needed, and a 1 hour travel charge per vehicle, Races are to begin <br />April 22, 2006, <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: The rates charged will fully cover the County's direct and indirect costs <br />far personnel with no other impacts anticipated. <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the contract and <br />authorize the Chair to sign it, subject to final review by staff and the County Attorney, <br />
