Beyond the ADA standards, assessment teams identified
opportunities to increase visual contrast on stairways and at abrupt changes in the slope of
sidewalks and interior walkways. Several types of signage improvements have been identified in
the Facilities Accessibility Self-Assessment, including a lack of braille on some County signs
and elevators.
IV.Assessment Expansion - Sidewalk Accessibility& Connectivity
The County is responsible for constructing and maintaining the sidewalks on its own property.
The original Facilities Accessibility Self-Assessment measured the width, slope, and surface
integrity of all sidewalks along the "accessible route" i.e. those walkways connecting an
accessible parking space and the main accessible entrance(s) of all County facilities. In
response to Commissioner Jacobs' petition on February 2nd, 2016 to include sidewalk
accessibility and connectivity in the Facilities Accessibility Self-Assessment, assessment
organizers expanded their assessment beyond ADA requirements to include the remaining
sidewalks not on an accessible route. These sidewalks are referred to in this report as
"secondary pathways."
7
