11
out to the accessibility specialist at NCDOT and learned that additional resources may be
available to assist with accessibility assessments and improvements along NCDOT-maintained
roads.
Asset Management Services (AMS) Facilities Maintenance technicians are responding using
updated preventive maintenance protocols to match the current ADA standard for correcting
and maintaining door opening pressures.
The following funding has been allocated in the Manager's Recommended Capital
Improvements Plan over the next few years to continue addressing the remaining safety,
security, and accessibility issues in order of priority:
Capital Improvements Facility Accessibility,
Plan Year Safety, and Security
Improvements
2016-17 (current) $319,000
2017-18 $30,000
2018-19 $114,500
2019-20 $111,500
This ongoing funding ensures that steady progress can be made to address the issues identified
in this assessment and any that issues may arise as County facilities change or expand in
usage.
The model for volunteer engagement used in this assessment was successful and contributed
to the quality and scope of the self-assessment while strengthening bridges between the County
and the disabled community. Staff intends to repeat this comprehensive facilities self-
assessment every 5 years using this self-assessment, repair, and prevention model.
Before the next assessment, staff also recommends that the County stays abreast of new
assistive technologies to further increase facility accessibility. For example, a new trend that is
required by an alternative code from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), but not
as yet by the ADA, is to install a vertical grab bar in addition to the horizontal grab bars required
in ADA restroom stalls. These vertical grab bars are said to be easier to use to help lift oneself
up from a seated position, and work in tandem with the existing bars. These new trends and
technologies may provide useful increases in accessibility.
10
faun „gym Effamoilko of wan Olindang and]nal khaki vain m°m mm mm fa km ookana m Pha P o bon and A0 A m°mqufremmmmnts.
