Hunt, Jr., initiated the <br /> NC 2000 Process by establishing the Commission on the Future <br /> of North 1Carolina. Aided by county NC 2000 chairpersons <br /> whose efforts involved more than 13,000 North Carolinians. <br /> the Commission heard from experts and citizens as it studied, <br /> over a period of some eighteen months, the problems and <br /> opportunities that will likely face the state over the next <br /> two decades. In March 1983. the Commission presented its <br /> report, including over one-hundred recommendations, to <br /> Governor 'Hunt: <br /> Upon reviewing the Commission's report, Governor Hunt <br /> asked the State Goals and Policy Board, which he chairs and <br /> whose members had been involved in the planning of NC 2000 <br /> and had erved as members of the Commission, to oversee <br /> follow-trough activities on the NC 2000recommendations. <br /> Among the follow-through activities which he specifically <br /> requested be initiated at that time was the establishment of <br /> six work "groups, or technical advisory groups, on the <br /> following topics: technical assistance to small business. <br /> hazardous substancas/waste, water resources, health care <br /> costs, health needs of older adults, and child health. The <br /> Governor asked the State Goals and Policy Board to charge <br /> these mot* groups with considering the problems identified by <br /> the Commission on the Future and with developing specific <br /> recommendations about how the goals established by the <br /> Commission might be met. The six work groups were <br /> established in May and have been meeting frequently since <br /> that time to develop preliminary recommendations. <br /> 7/19/83 <br />
