I have <br /> been a participant in one of these tracks: preparation of a <br /> detailed list of recommendations to the State Goals and Policy Board <br /> to follow up on Goal VII, Recommendations 18 and 19 of the <br /> NC 2000 report. <br /> Goal VII: To i)e Responsive to the Health Care Needsof an Aging Populatio <br /> Recommendation 18: Increase incentives to encourage health personnel <br /> to undertake an7or update training in geriatric and gerontological <br /> specialties; and ensure the availability of adequate instruction. <br /> Recommendation 19: Take the following actions, to ensure the provision <br /> of long-term care services to meet the social and health needs of <br /> the aging popillation: <br /> a. Examine current state and federal legislation and regulations, and <br /> seek waivers Or changes appropriate to the goals of helping the aged <br /> remain independent and encouraging and assisting families to care for <br /> their disabled elderly members. <br /> b. Begin now to estimate the need for institutional long-term care for <br /> The aged and to make provisions that will assure the availability and <br /> affordability of such care. <br /> A copy of ourl report is attached. The Reprt has been forwarded to <br /> the State Goals and Policy Board as well as to the Long-Term Care <br /> Advisory Committee appointed by Dr. Sarah Morrow, of which <br /> Chairman Richard Whitted is a member. <br /> Additionally, I have asked County Manager Ken Thompson to present at <br /> this time a status report on coordinative efforts we have been attemptit <br /> to implement among the Orange County Departments -- Social Services , <br /> Health and Aging -- towards training, schedIlling and delivering <br /> the various programs of home help and home care. <br /> As the Commissioner liason to the Social Services and Senior Citizen <br /> Boards, I urge your attention and support to both local and state <br /> efforts. <br /> Thank you. <br />
