-3-
• When it conies right down to it, we're much more concerned about
drinking waterguality than algae and nutrients.
• The EMC must not lose sight of the serious - and still unanswered -
,
public concerns about long-term health effects of synthetic organic
chemicals and trace metals which may be present in these lakes.
• The existing classification system does not prevent the gradual
deterioration of A-II waters.
• All A- II waters are not of equal quality . The Cape Fear River near
Wilmingtonlis not of the same high qualiti as NASA' s Cane Creek or
Durham 's LItcle River sites - even though they all satisfy A-II standards .
• Runoff from new development and effluent from new wastewater plants
in the Falls and Jordan watersheds will inevitably degrade these
water supply sources, even though present A-II standards may be met.
• We need a new and better approach.
• We need a-level of protection somewhere in between the existing A-I
and A- II categories.
• We therefore encourage the EMC to create a new "Enhanced Protection"
designation for certain stream segments or sub-basins of large reservoirs.
• Cities and ;counties can and will take more aggressive steps against
nonpoint p4Ilution through local zoning ordinances, subdivision
regulatiorI, and utility extension policies. However, the EMC must
work cooperatively with local governments, and not subvert these local
efforts bylissuing discharge permits in critical watersheds.
• We face a range of serious water quality issues. Please keep that full
range in mind.
• We applaud the EMC's vigorous efforts to get out in front of those
problems.
• We at Triangle J need your continuing help and leadership.
• We offer our own.
. ,
