Page 10
VEGETATION
Existing vegetation is an important feature in the development of land.
Land with mature existing vegetation is more valuable for development pur-
poses than land that has been cleared. Subdivisions and other residential
developments with large trees and a fair amount of vegetation are more en-
vironmentaily pleasing than developments with cleared land.
A large part of the land in the Area Study is forrested. Vegetation
includes milxtures of poplar, elm, pine, oak, and cedar trees. Several
large areas1 of mature trees include Popular Ridge, the area south of Inter-
state 85 between Old and New 86, Duke Forest, areas along the Eno River and
around Occoneechee Mountain. Most other portions of the study area are
characterized with smaller trees and underbrush.
