A trapezoidal area at ground level under the <br /> control of the airport authorities for the purpose of protecting the <br /> safety of approaches and keeping the area clear of congregation of <br /> , <br /> t , people. The runway clear zone begins at the end of each primary <br /> 1 <br /> surface and is symmetrically centered upon the extended runway <br /> centerline. (See appendix 6 for runway clear zone dimensions.) <br /> - 1 <br /> - i <br /> r. Runway, Safety Area. A rectangular area, symmetrical about the run- <br /> way centerline, which includes the runway, runway shoulders, and <br /> .- stopikays, if present. The portion abutting the edge of the runway <br /> shoulders, runway ends, and stopways is cleared, drained, graded, <br /> and usually turfed. Under normal conditions, the runway safety area <br /> g . is capable of supporting snow removal, firefighting, and rescue <br /> I equipment and of accommodating the occasional passage of aircraft <br /> without causing major damage to the aircraft. • <br /> .
