` -
.
Recommendations, Considerations on the Proposed Midway Airport Clear Zones
The purpose of this presentation is to raise several points
that I believe the Commissioners should consider in ruling on
the request for change of the proposed Midway Airport clear
zone from 5000 feet down to 1000 feet.
The attached diagram illustrate= a 20: 1 clear zone slope which
the FAA considers reasonable for safe airport operation per
DOT (FAA) Advisory Circular 150/5300-4B dated June 24, 1975.
Based on the 20: 1 clear zone slope and the 1000 foot clear
zone requested by the developer , any object, such as a tree at
the end of the runway clear zone must be no higher than 50
feet , if a clear approach is to be maintained.
Based on a review of tree heights for typical trees in the
area, (Ref; "Knowing your Trees" published by the American
Forestry Assbciation in 1974) , an attained height of 110' is a
reasonable estimate for trees in this area.
Tree Heights for commonly found trees in this area:
Loblolly Pine 120'
Pitch Pine BO - 100'
Long Leaf Pine 100 - 130'
Eastern Red Cedar 120 '
Lombardy Poplar 100 '
Hickory 120 - 140'
Beech 120'
Southern Red Oak 100 '
White Oak 150'
