The authorization <br /> overrides state or local regulations against tandem trailers. <br /> On April 6, 1983, the designation of North Carolina routes was made by. the <br /> Federal Highway Administration. On April 22, 1983, the State completed its <br /> review of the proposal, using two principal criteria: <br /> (1) That the routes should be continuous; and <br /> (2) That the routes should provide access to terminal facilities, <br /> including car dealerships. <br /> The State proposed thirty-eight (38) revisions and fifteen (15) ;additions, <br /> among whilh was U.S. 15-501 between U.S. 64 in Pittsboro and I-85 in Durham. <br /> IMPACT: The proposal to add U.S. 15-501 could create problems, including: <br /> (1) Impediments to traffic flow - U.S. 15-501 is primarily two lands <br /> side With steep grades in places. Trucks pulling tandem trailers <br /> have difficulty maintaining speed up hills. The 1982 traffic <br /> count on U.S. 15-501 between Chapel Hill and the Orange County line <br /> was 8,600 vehicles per day. The capacity of the road is approximately <br />
