PROJECT
This project involves two separate but related elements: (1) the Cheeks Township
Water/Sewer Extension Report; and (2) the Upper Eno Reservoir development Feasibility
Report.
The study area for the water/sewer extension report consists of the area bounded
generally by the TOwn. of Hillsborough on the east, by Buckhorn Road (SR 1114) on
the west, by Seven i Mile Creek on the south, and by McGowan Creek on the north.
The purpose of the report is to determine the feasibility of extending water and
sewer lines into the 1-85 corridor between the Town of Hillsborough and Buckhorn
Road to serve resi4ential, commercial and industrial development. Two water
providers serve the area - the Town of Hillsborough and the Orange-Alamance Water
Authority. The Ton of Hillsborough would collect sewage generated by and develop-
ment which existed :or occurred in the area.
The study area for the reservoir development feasibility report comprises the
Upper Eno River watershed and is bounded generally by US Highway 70 on the south,
NC Highway 86 on the north and east, and by Frazier Road (SR 1342) and Carr Store
Road (SR 1004) on the west.
Since the late 1960's, Seven Mile Creek has been under consideration for future
water supply for the Upper Eno Basin. Some land has been acquired toward this
purpose. Ideally, 'there would be a minimum of industrial development in a watershed
from which drinking water is being supplied. Accordingly, the purpose of the
feasibility report is to explore an upstream site that would not be impacted to
the extent that Seven Mile Creek is likely to experience--considering the proposed
widening of Interstate 85 and the desire for industrial development in Cheeks
Township. The report must provide an engineering, volume and cost analysis comparing
the different elements involved as outlined in 8.1-10 on pages 5 and 6.
Until recently, the} Seven Mile Creek Reservoir was thought to be the only long-
standing potential Water supply available. A report released by the NRCD Office
of Water Resources in August, 1982, indicated that an expanded Corporation Lake
would have a yield equivalent to the proposed Seven Mile Creek Reservoir. If
found to be more feasible as a future water supply, and expanded Corporation Lake
could be substituted for spvon m41.
