Parkinson's Awareness Month Proclamation <br /> 5 The Board considered a proclamation recognizing April 2017 as Parkinson's Awareness <br /> 6 Month and authorizing the Chair to sign. <br /> 7 Blake Tedder, Community Development Manager- NC Triangle--National Parkinson <br /> 8 Foundation (NPF) accepted the proclamation on behalf of his organization. <br /> 9 Commissioner Burroughs read the proclamation: <br /> 10 <br /> 11 ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> 12 PROCLAMATION RECOGNIZING APRIL 2017 AS PARKINSON'S AWARNESS MONTH <br /> 13 <br /> 14 WHEREAS, Parkinson's disease is a chronic, progressive, neurological disease and is the <br /> 15 second most common neurodegenerative disease in the United States; and <br /> 16 <br /> 17 WHEREAS, there is inadequate data on the incidence and prevalence of Parkinson's disease, <br /> 18 but it is estimated to affect approximately one million people in the United <br /> 19 States and the prevalence will more than double by 2040; and <br /> 20 <br /> 21 WHEREAS, Parkinson's disease is the 14th leading cause of death in the United States <br /> 22 according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; and <br /> 23 <br /> 24 WHEREAS, it is estimated that the economic burden of Parkinson's disease is at least $14.4 <br /> 25 billion annually, including indirect costs to patients and family members of$6.3 <br /> 26 billion; and <br /> 27 <br /> 28 WHEREAS, the symptoms of Parkinson's disease vary from person to person and can include <br /> 29 tremors; slowness of movement and rigidity; difficulty with balance, swallowing, <br /> 30 chewing, and speaking; cognitive impairment and dementia; mood disorders; <br /> 31 and a variety of other non-motor symptoms; and <br /> 32 <br /> 33 WHEREAS, increased research, education and community support services are needed to find <br /> 34 more effective treatments and to provide access to quality care to those living <br /> 35 with the disease today; <br /> 36 <br /> 37 NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, do hereby proclaim <br /> 38 April 2017 as Parkinson's Awareness Month in Orange County, North Carolina. <br /> 39 <br /> 40 This the 4th day of April 2017. <br /> 41 <br /> 42 A motion was made by Commissioner Burroughs, seconded by Commissioner Price for <br /> 43 the Board to approve the Proclamation Recognizing April 2017 as Parkinson's Awareness <br /> 44 Month and authorized the Chair to sign the proclamation. <br /> 45 <br /> 46 VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br /> 47 <br /> 48 Chair Dorosin said the new Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools (CHCCS) superintendent <br /> 49 Dr. Pam Baldwin is in attendance tonight. <br /> 50 Pam Baldwin thanked the BOCC for its welcome, and introduced herself briefly. <br />
