Organizational Capability, Orange County, the area to be served by this . <br /> project, is located in the Piedmont section of North Carolina, .It has a <br /> population of 69,398 (1979 estimate) of which 45% is rural. • Fifty percent <br /> of the count4's population lives in Chapel Hill Township, which is more <br /> ..: <br /> affluent than predominantly rural northern Orange County. <br /> The Orange County Department of Social Services -is based in the County <br /> seat of Hill borough, North Carolina, with a satellite office in Carrboro, <br /> North Carolina, adjacent to Chapel Hill. It employs sixty-five (85) individuals, <br /> . , including two Child Protective Services Supervisor,. a day care supervisor and . <br /> a daycare co rdinator. The agency provides a combination of social Work <br /> services. The project will be located within the Social. Work Division Of the <br /> agency, specifically within the Child Protective Servides :and Day Care Units. <br /> The Project 1 irector, graduate assistants, and the project 'secretary will be <br /> located in t e Child Protective Services Unit and supervised by the Child , <br /> Protective Services Supervisors. The Day Care Unit will supervise and coordinate <br /> the day care component. The two Child Protective Services Supervisors each <br /> have an M.S,W. degree with specialization in administration, planning and <br /> management. They have extensive direct Protective Services experience and . <br /> each has over three years supervisory experience. The Day Care Supervisor <br /> has nine years experience supervising day tare services in Orange County. <br /> The eve 31 uation component of the .project will be undertaken by researchers <br /> in the Department of Maternal and Child Health (DMCH) of the School of Public <br /> Health, UnivJrsity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. DMCH has been aleader in <br /> public health research of importance to mothers and children. Among these <br /> research projects have been many related to child abuse and neglect. For <br /> example, the r, spital, and Home Support for Maternal Attachment Project looked <br /> at ways to improve maternal attachment as a means of decreasing the frequency <br /> 1 <br /> of poor,health outcomes, including child maltreatment.
