The proposed project design requires that approximately <br /> I <br /> 60 parents of preschool and kindergarten children in families mandated to receive <br /> services ironl our agency be randomly assigned to one of three conditions: two <br /> 1 <br /> treatment models and one control group. All abused or neglected children of <br /> 1 <br /> all families will receive the standard services to which they would be entitled <br /> in the absence of this research, including daycare. The parents will receive <br /> either no pa ent education or the type of parent education prescribed for <br /> the model to which she/he is randomly assigned. The families will form four. <br /> ' cohorts during the course of a year of data collection. Each cohort will <br /> participate in the project for 10 weeks. All parents eligible for participation <br /> . . <br /> will have the,project thoroughly explained. No services which would be available <br /> in the absenie of the project will be withheld, and no penalties, expressed <br /> • 1 <br /> or implied, 11 result from a parent's declining to particiPate. All <br /> participants ill sign an informed consent, permitting them to withdraw at any , <br /> time. . <br /> • The two experimental models of parent education are known as: (1) daycare <br /> component ^7 role-modeling by a parent volunteer; (2) daycare component -- <br /> role-modelin: by daycare staff member. <br /> Prior t. beginning parent education the following data will be collected <br /> by the casew.rker assigned to the case: socio-demographic information, <br /> nature of abuse and neglect, types of problems in the household (Stress Index <br /> and Quality f Life Inventory Form) and client's functioning (Berkeley Planning <br /> Associates C. lent Functioning Form). In addition, the caseworker will record <br /> monthly the s rvices parents received while in the project (Berkeley Planning <br /> Assodiates Inventory of Services Received by Client). <br /> Other data to be 'collected on the parent prior to beginning the pioject <br /> include: assessment of parent's knowledge of child development (Stedman and <br /> Reramer's'Inventoryof Knowledge,of Social and Emotional Development); <br /> , - <br /> . . . <br /> . . <br />
