-3-
b. Benefits and Results. It is expected that the results of this research
would generate new insights for rational program development with a view toward
the prevention of child abuse. For example, results indicating that parenting
skills improve with the use of the parent education model of volunteer role
modeling in he home suggest that such a model could be incorporated into the
existing array of preventive services.
Additionally, evidence of this model's cost-effectiveness would probably
increase the likelihood of its addition to the treatment and prevention service
plans of our Protective Service Unit. Like many local governmental units,
Orange County is experiencing a scarcity of financial resources for new health.
and welfare Programs. While aounty officials are concerned with families in
•
distress, they•are seeking ways of effectively meeting these families' needs
with limited resources. Additionally, they are attempting to target these
limited resources to those who are in greatest need and who will benefit the
•
most.
• It is expected that this proposed research and demonstration project will
benefit Orange County's efforts to prevent and treat child maltreatment. If
this research demonstrates that a selected model or models of parent education
areboth successful in improving parenting skills as well as cost-effective,
then this information can be used to encourage officials and the public to "
financially support the development of these programs for the families in
greatest nee . Furthermore, the impact of the parent education program can be
magnified by offering it to families at risk of abuse and neglect before an
incident tak.s place.
• .
•
