Parents, <br /> teachers,..an4 professionals are concerned about the revisions. On Friday, <br /> September 3rd, 300 people came to'Raleigh for a public hearing on the <br /> federal changes. Because:of this strong- public response, The Governor's <br /> Ad3fQCacy Coufcil for Persons. with Disabilities GACPD) the North Carolina <br /> Association of Educators, an td t ee ,r. --. : spline Associat ol . - a ed <br /> ens, a ng over 1 ocal parent and pro ess onal groups, are <br /> sponsoring si night-time regional hearings around the State. These hearings <br /> will allow parents, teachers, and other people who serve the. handicapped to <br /> express thei I views on services to handicapped. - <br /> The listing of- regional hearing sites along with some of the local co- <br /> sponsoring grropups and a regional GACPD contact person are on the enclosed <br /> flyer.. As you can see, each hearing involves a multi-county area and will <br /> draw persons within approximately a 60-mile radius. The back of the flyer <br /> also lists many of the federal regulation changes. <br /> Although it may seem that the hearing topic -- federal rule changes --. <br /> is purely a °ifederal matter," the education of handicapped children is also <br /> a local concce'rn. The hearing should provide a unique forum for local elected <br /> representativ'es and officials to better understand what handicapped children <br /> need, what programs are working, and what needs to be changed.
