1cv~a <br /> dk - <br /> position on HWA; the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Board of Education, Ms. Andresen said, <br /> had repeatedly requested that air flights over the schools from HWA be restricted <br /> or stopped; and the Chamber of Commerce's enthusiastic endorsement of the Midway <br /> Airport. She said that UNC has said it will move all air planes to the Midway <br /> Airport "if the same services are available." Ms. Andresen asserted that Midway <br /> "is such an airport." 3hg continued that the health and safety of the HWA are <br /> "inextricably" connected to the Midway proposal and urged approval of the Midway <br /> proposal. <br /> Ms. Sandra Bothwell, resident of Chapel Hill: Noted that there are 1200 <br /> students near the HWA and pointed out the.upproach to the runway, She said "90%" <br /> of the airplane crashes occurred near the runway; and cited the health and safety <br /> hazard. Noting the accident which occurred at University Mall in which a car <br /> careened out of control and children were injured, she asked the Boards how badly <br /> they would feel if an airplane crashed on the school . <br /> Ms- Mary Lou Rubins, Chapel Hill resident: Said she is a teacher who lives <br /> near Phillips School; she is concerned about the possibility of a plane crash <br /> near the sohool. She cited the safety records of commercial pilots versus private <br /> pilots, <br /> Mr' Bill Thorpe, Chapel Hill resident: Cited concern for the safety of the <br /> school children and said they need help moving HWA out. He said UNC is willing <br /> to move its planes. <br /> Ms. Mary Penta, Chapel Hill resident: Also a representative of Citizens For <br /> Airport Planning. Ms. Penta cited the health and safety factors involved with <br /> HWA so near the schools. She requested that the Commissioners approve the Special <br /> Use Permit request for Midway while she noted that 70% of the County's population <br /> lives in Chapel Hill. <br /> Mr. Franklin Kirby, Bingham Township resident: Told the Board that the <br /> developers of Midway showed drainage and culverts built onto his family's <br /> land , He said they don't own the land and he doesn't want the runoff water on <br /> his property' <br /> Mr. David Curl , resident of Bingham Township: Said he still had a house <br /> built within 1608 feet of the end of the runway and he is still concerned about <br /> it. He expressed sympathy with the Chapel Hill people who wish to close HWA but <br /> he feels Bingham Township isn't the place for a replacement. He asked who the <br /> Buck Mountian Company was and asked that they step forward and identify themselves. <br />
