268
Mr. Richard Whitted
Page Two
March 8, 1982
2) adequate safety provisions including
runway lights, rotating beacon, instrument
approach provisions, etc. ;
3) adequate proximity to the University; and
4) adequate assurance of the continued operation
and the financial soundness of any new airport.
We would point out that the assurance of the continued operation
and the financial soundness of any new airport facility is of
particular importance. Such assurance must be attained without
a commitment of the University to move to such a facility. The
University cannot place itself in a positionofbeing the first
to move to a new airport and, in fact, the University would
need to seek the funding that would be required to make such a
move.
The University is encouraged by the proposal for the new Midway
Airport as representing the first indication of a move to establish
an acceptable alternative airport facility for southern Orange
County. This facility has the potential for meeting the needs of
the University; and therefore, the University would recommend
careful consideration of this proposal.
Sincerely,
John L. Temple
Vice Chancellor
_ -
