241
; t)
Richard Whitted, Chairman
County Commissioners Office
County Court House
106 East Margaret Lane
Hillsborough, N,C. 27278 July 5, 1982
Dear Mr, Whitted,
I am writing to express both my objections and dismay over the
developments regarding the proposed Midway air port in Bingham Township.
I am requesting that this letter be made part of the record for the
public hearing on Ally 8, 1982
Just a few months ago a hearing was held, and the airport and the
industrial park needed to support the air port was turned down. Both
the political support and the long range needs of Orange County required
the decision rendered by the Commissioners However, you then neutralized
this decision by encouraging the Buck Mountain group to come in with
another proposal, When I called the Commissioners to object this apparent
reversal, I was told that if it was opposed, the Commissioners might be sued.
The reasons for opposing the Midway air port proposal continue
to be compelling ones:
First it is not an appropriate location since better sites are
available; foremost near Hillsborough where the needed indulstrial
development has already begun andialere adequate highway access is available
Secondly the Buck Mountain developer, Mr. Hazzard, has not had a
good track record for fiscal responsibility. He has already gone into
bankrupsy once, and too many people in CHapel Hill have been dissatisfied
with his development methods Unless his group is required to post a
sufficiently high bond to assure financial responsibility, his group will be
in a position to force the Commissioners into the gradual industrialization
of the air port, in violation of our newly passed zoiing ordinance.
Thirdly, I have been in the process of selling some farm land within a
two mile radius of the air port site, but several buyers hithdrew their
offer and interest because of the threatened air port. I understand from my
attorney, if the airport is apporved and my land values continue to be
depreciated, I have a good case for suing the County
I urge you to withhold appooval of the commercial air port and
development and to uphold the zoning which is in the best interest of Bingham
Township and the long range development of Orange County.
Sincerely,
v--,_
Eric Schopler
Morrow Mill Road
Bingham Township
Please make a copy of this letter available to each member of the Board of
County Commissioners
