1 <br /> ORANGE COUNTY <br /> BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br /> Meeting Date: April 4, 2017 <br /> Action Agenda <br /> Item No. 4-f <br /> SUBJECT: Parkinson's Awareness Month Proclamation <br /> DEPARTMENT: BOCC <br /> ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br /> Proclamation Donna Baker, Clerk to the Orange <br /> County Board of Commissioners, <br /> 919-245-2130 <br /> PURPOSE: To consider a proclamation recognizing April 2017 as Parkinson's Awareness <br /> Month. <br /> BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease is a chronic, progressive, neurological disease and is the <br /> second most common neurodegenerative disease in the United States. <br /> It is estimated to affect approximately one million people in the U.S and, according to the <br /> Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is the 14th leading cause of death. <br /> It is estimated that the economic burden of Parkinson's disease is at least $14.4 billion annually, <br /> including indirect costs to patients and family members of$6.3 billion. <br /> FINANCIAL IMPACT: None <br /> SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: There are no Orange County Social Justice Goals applicable to <br /> this item. <br /> RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the Proclamation <br /> Recognizing April 2017 as Parkinson's Awareness Month and authorize the Chair to sign the <br /> proclamation. <br />
