76 <br /> • Designated three additional properties as Orange County Local Historic Landmarks: <br /> the White Cross School in White Cross (2015); the Nicholas Corbett Hester House in <br /> Cedar Grove (2015); and the Captain John S. Pope Farm in Cedar Grove (2013). <br /> This brings the total to nine landmarks. <br /> • Provided assistance with the restoration work at Blackwood Farm Park, including <br /> development of historical interpretive signage for the Strayhorn slave cemetery. <br /> • Held a successful piedmont regional history symposium in partnership with <br /> Preservation Chapel Hill and the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough (2014) <br /> • Hosted a historic preservation training workshop for piedmont region city and county <br /> historic preservation and planning staffers, in partnership with the State Historic <br /> Preservation Office and the Certified Local Government Program (2014) <br /> • Held a full membership retreat to review goals and establish a new five-year action <br /> plan to focus the energies of the HPC on a series of major projects and initiatives <br /> (2013) <br /> • Completed an archaeological survey (Phase II) of Hollow Rock Access Area (New <br /> Hope Creek Preserve) to further identify Native American sites, with funding <br /> assistance from a $15,000 federal grant through the State Historic Preservation <br /> Office (2013) <br /> • Convened the Orange County Historic Preservation Summit (May 2012) involving ten <br /> organizations (historic commissions and non-profits) from the county and <br /> municipalities <br /> • Completed Design Standards for Orange County Local Landmarks and Local Historic <br /> Districts to provide the HPC with proper design review guidelines (2010) <br /> • Prepared the Cultural Resources Chapter of the 2030 Comprehensive Plan (2008) <br /> List of Specific Tasks, Events, or Functions Performed or Sponsored Annually. <br /> • Submits detailed annual report of all preservation activities to the State to comply with <br /> p p pY <br /> federal and state requirements to maintain Orange County's status as Certified Local <br /> Government, including mandatory member and staff training; thereby allowing the <br /> County to apply for special federal grants for historic preservation activities <br /> • Partners with Preservation Chapel Hill, the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough and <br /> other local history groups to promote and encourage historic preservation as a tool to <br /> slow down sprawl, encourage smart growth <br /> • Administers the Orange County Local Historic Landmark Program, including reviews <br /> of proposed restoration work or additions through Certificates of Appropriateness. <br /> • Provides forum for public comments on nominations to National Register of Historic <br /> Places <br /> • Conducts reviews of proposed new infrastructure projects that might have an impact <br /> on historic resources, including cell towers, pipelines and transportation projects, <br /> including the Light Rail project, in partnership with the State Historic Preservation <br /> Office. <br />
