Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Hillsborough all thrive, in part, because of
visitors, and that's why we encourage them, through the Visitors Bureau, to come
here. Tourism is an industry, but it's different from every other industry in one
noteworthy way: it's invisible. For the most part. We see visitors, of course —
they're what makes parking more challenging and the lines at restaurants longer
— but there is no dramatic fanfare: they come, make investments in our
community, and go. It's a clean, green and sustainable form of economic
development that boosts revenues and helps local businesses thrive.
In addition the Visitors Bureau supports the county's sustainability goals by
continuing to build an industry that does not require infrastructure and one that
tells the story of our preservation efforts, historic milestones and unique narrative
in the state and the south.
Describe the collaboration relationship(s) this particular board has with
other advisory boards and commissions?
The Visitors Bureau works daily with the local cultural arts group, the Orange
County Arts Commission, Orange County Economic Development, various parks
and recreation groups, cultural tourism, the State of NC Department of
Commerce, RDU Authority, historic and preservation society and various
priorities and conference bids from Towns of Chapel Hill, Carrboro and
Hillsborough.
If your board/commission played the role of an Element Lead Advisory
Board involved in the 2030 Comprehensive Plan preparation process,
please indicate your board's activities/accomplishments as they may relate
to the Comprehensive Plan's goals or objectives.
(The Element Lead Advisory Boards include: Planning Board, EDC,
OUTBoard, Commission for the Environment, Historic Preservation
Commission, Agriculture Preservation Board, Affordable Housing Board,
Recreation and Parks Advisory Council)
Not Applicable
