38
Raleigh Arts Commission and the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County
• Quarterly Artists' Salons featuring free professional development sessions for artists
• Annual 4th US Congressional District High School Art Competition
• Public Art initiatives on county-owned property
Describe this board/commission's activities/accomplishments in carrying out BOCC
goal(s)/priorities, if applicable.
Goal 3: Implement planning and economic development policies which create a balanced, dynamic local
economy, and which promote diversity, sustainable growth, and enhanced revenue while embracing
community values.
• Partnerships on projects with local agencies and organizations including Orange County Animal Services,
Towns of Hillsborough, Chapel Hill and Carrboro, Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission.
• Economic Development through the arts. o Serving as lead agency for Americans for the Arts' Arts and
Economic Prosperity Survey V, OCAC worked with the Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission, the Town of
Carrboro and the Town of Hillsborough to gather economic impact data from 177 arts and cultural
organizations within Orange County as well as attendees to arts events throughout the county. This data will
be compiled by AFTA and provided through a report of town, county, state and national data in March 2017.
This report is the gold-standard in determining the impact the arts have on the local economy.
Goal 6: Ensure a high quality of life and lifelong learning that champions diversity, education at all levels,
libraries, parks, recreation, and animal welfare.
• Education for at-risk children Children with exposure to the arts have lower drop-out rates and better
standardized test scores. Because of this, the socioeconomic data of area schools is considered during the
Arts Grant application process. The demographic breakdown of students served and rate of Free and
Reduced Lunch is considered when selecting funded programs.
• Increase collaboration between school districts For the OCAC Fall 2016 Grants Cycle, we will be
funding a $5k Arts Coalition Grant partnership between three Title I elementary schools within Orange
County Schools. These three schools will partner with The ArtsCenter in Carrboro to provide 16 one-week
residencies with high-qualified teaching artists in New Hope Elementary, Efland-Cheeks Global Elementary
and Center Elementary Schools. The residencies will be followed up with a professional performance at The
ArtsCenter in Carrboro. The large-scale arts immersion program will serve as a model to hopefully be
replicated in other schools in 2017.
Describe the collaboration relationship(s) this particular board has with other advisory boards and
commissions?
Throughout 2016 the OCAC Advisory Board worked in partnership with:
• Chapel Hill Public Arts Commission
• Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau
• Orange County Animal Services
• Raleigh Arts Commission
• Durham Arts Council
• United Arts Council of Raleigh/Wake County
• North Carolina Arts Council
•Americans for the Arts
