The septic system consists of a large underground tank <br /> which drains to a concrete-lined sand and gravel filter. Although pre- <br /> liminary studies are still underway to determine the condition and capacity of <br /> the existing septic system, available data indicates that the existing system has <br /> performed satisfactorily. <br /> Based upon preliminary calculations, the wastewater demand for the proposed use <br /> is less than previous demand for the school. The existing system was built for <br /> the school by Orange County in 1933 to serve approximately 150 students and <br /> faculty members. The septic system met the wastewater demands for the school <br /> until the 1968, when the county sold the property. Since the early 1970's, <br /> eight small cottages have also been using the schools' wastewater disposal <br /> system. The system was renovated in January and the tank was pumped out in <br /> February of 1989. <br /> Three writers and three artists are currently working in the school on a per- <br /> manent basis. Approximately three times per month the building is also used <br /> for functions such as auctions and wedding receptions for up to 130 people. <br /> Mr. Phillips would like to add a small cafeteria in the building for use during <br /> these functions. <br /> With the construction of any necessary improvements and the issuance of a NCDHS <br /> permit, the existing White Cross School septic system should adequately serve <br /> the proposed uses of the property.
