This growth rate is significantly higher than the growth rates <br /> experienced in +/- North Carolina, and in the nation during the same <br /> period (Table 2-4) . <br /> Within Orange County the bulk of the population increase during <br /> recent ,decades has occurred in Chapel Hill Township. Chapel Hill <br /> Township's population has increased by 27,884 persons since 1970, <br /> now contributing 65% of the total population in the County.+/- <br /> Although Chapel Hill Township accounted for the greatest proportion <br /> of the total growth in the County, the growth rate in this more <br /> populated Township was fifth highest, only greater than Little River <br /> and Cedar Grove Townships. The Township experiencing the greatest <br /> rate of growth is Eno Township at present is Bingham Township, which <br /> is showing an average annual growth rate since 1980 of 5.06%. <br /> Binghad currently accounts for only 5.6% of the total population. <br /> Historically, the distribution of population throughout the County <br /> has been characterized by fast-growing towns in southern Orange, <br /> moderate growth in Central Orange, and declining rural populations <br /> in the north. A significant proportion of the population increase in <br /> the County can be accounted for in the municipal areas, particularly <br /> the Towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Chapel Hill from, a <br /> population of 26,195 in 1970 to a population of 37,205 by 1987.1 <br /> This growth alone accounts for almost 25% of the population growth <br /> in the County. Carrboro's growth contributed almost 13 percent of <br /> the County's population increase between 1970 and 1980, and has <br /> increased in population dramatically during the 1980's - going from. <br /> a 1970 population of 5,058 persons to 11,375 in 1987.1 <br /> TABLE 2.6 <br /> 1- N.C.
