Existing sections of the Park are shown on the Existing Land Use
Map.
The two southern townships in Orange County are Chapel Hill and
Bingham Townships.
Chapel Hill Township contains the Towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro.
The combined population of these two Towns in 1987 was 48,580*, or
48.9% of the total County population - not including their
respective extraterritorial transition areas. The population of
Chapel Hill Township was 66,740 in 1987, which is 65% of the
aggregate County total.**
Employment centers in Chapel Hill Township include the University of
North Carolina, North Carolina Memorial Hospital and Blue Cross-Blue
Shield. The proximity of the Township to Durham and Research
Triangle Park means that residents can commute from the Township to
these other centers of employment. The Orange Water and Sewer
Authority (OWASA) provides water and sewer service to the Towns of
Chapel Hill and Carrboro as well as to fringe area in Orange,
Chatham and Durham Counties. The primary water supply for the
Chapel Hill-Carrboro area is University Lake, which is located just
to the west of Carrboro. This source is augmented by the recently
completed Cane Creek Reservoir in western Orange County.
Duke University has large holdings of land in northern Chapel Hill
Township which are used for teaching, research and limited
recreation purposes. These large forested areas are an asset to the
Township. Their conversion for residential development would
certainly have a major impact on land use patterns in the Township.
Chapel Hill and Carrboro exercise ultimate planning jurisdiction in
an area beyond their corporate limits, which is termed their
Transition Area. This Transition Area is a small part of the Joint
Planning Land Use Area for Orange County, Chapel Bill, and Carrboro,
which was adopted in 1987. The extent of this area is shown on the
Planning Jurisdictions, Map. The County plans for surrounding areas.
Growth and development in recent years in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro
area has been predominantly to the north and west.
[delete paragraph]
Bingham Township is located to the west of Carrboro. Current
population in the Township is 5780 persons. A major transportation
route, US 54, runs east-west across the Township out of Carrboro and
into Alamance County. Because of its proximity to the major urban
area in the County, Bingham Township has experienced considerable
* - Orange County Planning Department estimate, 1987.
** N.C.
