1
1
of Mebane is within the Township and the County, the major portion
of it being in Alamance County. The population of Cheeks Township
was 6214 persons in 1988. The Efland/West Orange area has a
population of approximately 1250 persons. It is the site of several
small textile manufacturing firms, and there are also a number of
commercial uses in the Efland area. Efland is now served by sewer
service by virtue of a sewer line constructed under Orange County
authority. It is also furnished with water by Orange-Alamance Water
Systems Incorporated, a private non-profit corporation. Raw water
is taken from Corporation Lake on the Eno, located just north of US
70, and is treated and pumped west along US 70 through Efland and on
into Alamance County around Mebane. The system has about 400
metered connections in Orange County.
The population of the Town of Mebane was 3761 persons as of 1987.
517 of those persons lived in the part of Mebane within Orange
County. Mebane exercises a one mile extraterritorial planning
jurisdiction. In Orange County its planning jurisdiction extends
beyond one mile in an area between US 70 and 1-85 where the Town has
developed an industrial park. This area is provided with sewer and
water and has attracted several major corporations including General
Electric. +/- Most of the remainder of Cheeks Township, both north
and south of the I-85/US 70 transportation corridor, is rural in
character and consists of agricultural land uses and scattered non-
farm development.
Eno Township is located in east-central Orange County. The 1988
township population was 5742 persons. There are no incorporated
places in this township. The I-85/US 70 transportation corridor
occupies the southern portion of the township and has attracted
significant residential and non-residential development.
These highways give southern Eno Township good access to the City of
Durham and the employment opportunities in the City and at Duke
University. As a result, Eno Township had an average population
growth rate of 7.04% per annum from 1970-1980, the highest rate of
any Township. This growth rate has slowed to 3.23% since 1980,
however. The remainder of Eno township, especially north of St.
Mary's Road, is rural and, agricultural in character.
Eno Township is currently not served by public sewer. Water service
is provided in two areas at the eastern and western boundaries of
the Township. City of Durham water service has recently been
extended along US 70 into Orange County near the interchange with I-
85. Water lines from the town of Hillsborough extend into Eno
Township along US 70 as far east as the junction of US 70 and By-
pass 70.
A unique feature in Eno Township is the Eno River State Park. It is
the only North Carolina State Park that is linear in character.
Sections of the park extend along the Eno River in Eno Township and
into Durham County. Acquisition of land or easements are
incomplete, but major sections of park lands have been acquired.
