Tobacco is the major cash crop in these two townships. These
townships mark the southern edge of a major tobacco-growing region
which extends to the north into Virginia.
Cedar Grove. Township has experienced little and sometimes no
population growth since 1970. The Township is distant from major
employment centers in Chapel Hill, Durham, Research Triangle Park
and Burlington. The Township is unlikely to see significant
population growth in the near future, although recent trends
indicate that residential development is beginning to spillover.
Little River Township has experienced some population growth in the
past 10 years, especially along Guess Road. This township's
proximity to Durham is no doubt a major reason for this growth.
Suburbanization of this area will likely accelerate in the future as
Durham grows outward.
Hillsborough, Cheeks and Eno are the three central tier townships in
the County. All three are traversed east-west by a major
transportation corridor consisting of Interstate 85, US 70 +/- and a
main line of the Southern Railroad that connects the area with other
cities in the region. The excellent access afforded by these
parallel transportation routes has resulted in a more developed
character for these townships than those in northern Orange County.
Two towns, an unincorporated village and a string of residential as
well as commercial and industrial uses occur along this
transportation corridor. The increased intensity of development can
be clearly seen on the Existing Land Use Map.
The Town of Hillsborough, the County seat, dominates Hillsborough
Township. The population of the Township is 11,885 persons. The
presence of 1-85 has shaped Hillsborough's development in recent
years with growth areas being centered on the two interstate
interchanges in the Township south of the town. NC 86 connects the
town with southern Orange County. In addition, Interstate 40 the
Hillsborough easy access to Research Triangle Park and Raleigh and
is a major facet of increased development pressure on Aillsborough
and central Orange County +/-.
The Town of Hillsborough operates a sewer and water system, whose
current service area is within the town's planning jurisdiction.
The raw water supply source is Lake Ben Johnson on the Eno River
West of town. A future reservoir in central Orange, Seven-Mile
Creek, may augment this water source in coming years.
The Town of Hillsborough's planning and zoning jurisdiction extends
approximately one mile beyond its corporate limits. The exact
boundaries of its planning area are shown on the Planning
Jurisdiction map. The County has jurisdiction over surrounding
areas.
Cheeks Township lies to the west of Hillsborough and contains two
developed areas - the small unincorporated village of Efland and the
Town of Mebane on the western edge of the Township.
