, ,-- <br /> 2 <br /> /MPLEMENTATION PLAN FOR THE YOUTH symPoszum RECOMMENDATIONS <br /> The Youth Symposium Steering Committee met several times and <br /> agreed on the following: <br /> TOPICS: EDUCATION AND DROP-OUT PREVENTION <br /> Implementation of Recommendation: In March, 1989, Orange County <br /> Schools' Drop-out Prevention Task Force submitted a report to the <br /> County School Board. The recommendations, intended to reduce the <br /> number of dropouts in the Orange County School System, will be <br /> addressed by the County School Board, <br /> In April, 1989, Chapel Rill-Carrboro Schools sponsored a workshop <br /> entitled -At-Itimall..L, Recommendations from the conference will <br /> be discussed by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School Board. <br /> Rather than develop an implementation plan for Education Drop- <br /> out Prevention recommendations, the Steering Committee suggested <br /> that the Assistant County Manager meet with the respective <br /> Assistant Superintendents to coordinate a cooperative <br /> implementation plan after the School Board's discussions. <br /> Timetable: Fall , 1989 <br /> TOPICS: TEENS IN CRISIS, TEENS AND THEIR FAMILIES, AND LEISURE <br /> Implementation of Recommendations: The Steering Committee members <br /> concluded that the recommendations under these topics should be <br /> the focus of a new position. This position should be established <br /> within the county government structure to coordinate and <br /> disseminate information about services for youth. Descriptions <br /> outlining how the position would function have been submitted to <br /> the County Manager. The County Manager will include this position <br /> in the Manager's 1989-90 Recommended Budget. <br /> Timetable: July, 1989 <br /> TOPICS: EMPLOYMENT AND POVERTY <br /> implementation of Recommendations: All recommendations under the <br /> Poverty and Employment should be addressed at a Orange County <br /> Commissioners' sponsored "Forum on Poverty" to be held Fall 1989. <br /> In addition to addressing the recommendations, the one half day <br /> forum should promote a greater awareness of the continuous trend <br /> of poverty that can erode growth in the County and become more <br /> taxing on all human services systems. Essentially, the forum <br /> would foster dialogue among approximately 50 representatives from <br />
