26
the detailed designs of the road are prepared. No changes are proposed for this roadway.
Y
ALSTON AVENUE EXTENSION
Background: This proposed thoroughfare would extend from Alston Avenue north of
Holloway Street parallel to the railroad and cross under I-85 near Camden Avenue. From
this point two alignments are possible: the original alignment would swing west throe
a section of dedicated right-of-way north of Club Blvd., and tie into Roxboro Street through
Road. The new alignment would follow Midland Terrace and Dearborn Drive and
intersect with Oxford Road at Hamlin Road. Those routes would give needed relief to
the Bragtown section of Roxboro Street. The new route would also provide better access
to Treyburn from the eastern part of the city.
Comments: A comment was received concerning the new alignment of Alston Ave. Ext.
at Midland Terrace. The alignment as shown on the plan would take a new food
distribution facility.
Response: The old and new alignments of Alston Avenue Extension will be shifted to the
northeast to avoid this property. Both the old and the new alignments are proposed to
remain, on the plan.
SOUTHEAST QUADRANT
EAST END CONNECTOR
Background: The East End Connector is included on the Adopted Thoroughfare Plan. It
is a freeway linking US 70 to the Dean Freeway east of East End Avenue,
improve access between northern Dunham and the Research Triangle It and greatly
Durham International Airport.
e Park and Raleigh-
Comments: A comment was made that the Connector will not improve access for East
Durham since much of the area does not have access to either the Dean Freeway or US
70 and that access to the Dean Freeway is needed between Briggs Avenue and Ellis Road.
The request was made for improved access to US 70, the Dean Freeway, and the East
End Connector.
Response:The East End Connector remains the primary thoroughfare improvement in East
Durham. It will improve access from the Raleigh Durham International Airport, the
Research Triangle Park and east Durham to I-85 and points north. Additional minor
2.21,
