Two parcels of Duke University <br /> land are located immediately across New Hope Creek from the southern end of <br /> the Proposed Commercial Transition area (Chapel Hill twp. T.M. 14 LW= <br /> 11&12) . They are, however, recommended for removal from the Duke Forest by <br /> the recent report of the Land Resources Committee and will be classified as <br /> residual endowment. land, and I will not comment on the possible effects on <br /> those parcels. Rather, as resource manager of the Duke Forest, I am interested <br /> in those aspects of the proposal which could affect the continued ability of <br /> the Duke Forest to provide those resources necessary for it to operate as a <br /> reaching and research facility. <br /> It appears that the potential for changes in water quality of New Hope <br /> Creek constitutes the most obvious possible effect on research in the <br /> Forest, primarily in the Korstian Division several miles downstream. <br /> Sedimentation during construction, increased storm water flows from <br /> additional impervious surfaces, failure of sewage disposal systems or a <br /> .... <br /> ..... <br /> possible chemical spill each could be detrimental to current and future <br /> s. studies utilizing New Hope Creek. Without more information on the <br /> development plans such as water supply sources, waste disposal methods, <br /> density, types of commercial activity, etc. it is difficult to comment on <br /> specific downstream effects. <br /> Review of additional information will assist in providing a basis for <br /> additional comment.
