ORANGE COUNTY <br /> BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> Action Agenda <br /> Item No.1/0 A- I <br /> ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br /> Meeting Date: March 21, 1989 <br /> SUBJECT: Recognition-'of Participants in Adolescent Parenting Program <br /> DEPARTMENT: Social Services PUBLIC HEARING Yes X No <br /> ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br /> Martha Pryor-Cook <br /> TELEPHONE NUMBER: <br /> Hillsborough - 732-8181, <br /> Chapel Hill - 968-4501 <br /> Mebane - 227-2031 <br /> Durham - 688-7331 <br /> PURPOSE: <br /> To recognize the Community Advisory Committee, Volunteers, and the staff of the <br /> Adolescent Parenting Program. <br /> BACKGROUND: <br /> An Orange County Department of Social Services program which uses trained volunteers <br /> working one-on-one with teenage mothers to help them stay in school, learn parenting <br /> skills and avoid a second pregnancy, received a national award from the American Public <br /> Welfare Association (APWA) on March 1, 1989 in Washington, D.C. <br /> The Adolescent Parenting Program is a 1989 winner in the APWA Successful Projects <br /> Initiative Awards Program, a national competition recognizing outstanding innovative <br /> efforts by public human service agencies in serving low-income Americans. <br /> Through the Adolescent Parenting Program, volunteers spend at least four hours a week <br /> with the teen mother and the teens participate in monthly peer group meetings. The <br /> program stresses family stability, appropriate health care and developing self-sufficiency <br /> skills. <br /> RECOMMENDATION: <br /> Acknowledge the hard work and dedication of all those involved in the accomplishments <; <br /> of this outstanding program. <br />
