Department of Natural Resources and <br /> Community Development. <br /> BACKGROUND: NRCD has announced the availability of additional Emergency <br /> Shelter Grant Program (ESGP) funds. The purpose of this <br /> program is to assist families and individuals who are <br /> homeless primarily due to their economic circumstances. <br /> These grants will be awarded to local governments to help <br /> improve the quality and availability of emergency shelters <br /> and services for the homeless in their communities. Since <br /> this program began in 1987, the County has been awarded <br /> funding three (3) times resulting in $25,597 in ESGP funds <br /> being directed to the Inter-Faith Council for the operation <br /> of their Community Shelter. <br /> Again the Housing and Community Development Department is <br /> proposing submission of an ESGP application with InterFaith <br /> Council acting as subrecipient. Inter-Faith has agreed to <br /> provide the matching resources necessary. This application <br /> is requesting $45, 000 in rehabilitation funds to be used by <br /> Inter-Faith Council for renovation of the Old Police <br /> Building in Chapel Hill , the present site of the shelter. <br /> The application deadline is March 28, 1989. <br /> County staff have met with representatives of Inter-Faith <br /> Council to discuss and prepare the proposed application. <br /> The application has been forwarded to the appropriate <br /> County officials for review and comment. <br /> RECOMMENDATION(S) : <br /> Authorize the submission of an Emergency Shelter Grant <br /> Application and authorize the Chair to sign the Application <br /> on behalf of the Board. <br /> I <br /> I <br /> % . • - - -• • ' - ' <br />
