ORANGE COUNTY <br /> BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> Action Agenda <br /> Item No. G-20 <br /> ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br /> Meeting Date: MARCH 21, 1989 <br /> SUBJECT: <br /> ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIC PLAN <br /> DEPARTMENT: ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PUBLIC HEARING YES: NO: X <br /> ATTACHMENT(S) : INFORMATION CONTACT: Sylvia Price <br /> Copies of the EDC Strategic Plan <br /> were circulated on March 8, 1989 <br /> TELEPHONE NUMBER- <br /> Hillsborough 732-8181 <br /> Chapel Hill - 968-4501 <br /> Mebane - 227-2031 <br /> Durham - 688-7331 <br /> PURPOSE: To approve the ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIC PLAN. <br /> BACKGROUND: In FY 1987-88, the BOCC approved the concept of an Economic <br /> Development Strategic Plan, and provided funding in the current year (FY <br /> 1988-1989) budget for consultancy assistance to prepare the plan. The EDC <br /> in June agreed a Mission Statement and Charge for a citizens' Executive <br /> Committee to make recommendations for the Strategic Plan. The Executive <br /> Committee was appointed by the EDC in August 1988 and consisted of 30 <br /> persons, chosen to be demographically, geographically and occupationally <br /> representative of the County. This group of citizens worked in a <br /> committed and intense way throughout September, October and November of <br /> 1988, and presented their Report and Recommendations to the EDC on <br /> December 8, 1988. <br /> During January and February of 1989 the EDC, assisted by several members <br /> of the Executive Committee, has worked to produce an Implementation <br /> Strategy to address the Recommendations of the Executive Committee. <br /> At the BOCC meeting held March 13, 1989 the EDC presented the ECONOMIC <br /> DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIC PLAN, a document which incorporates the <br /> Recommendations of the citizens Executive Committee and the necessary <br /> strategies for implementation, including timeframe, milestones, <br /> implementors and costs. <br /> On March 13, 1989, the Board of Commissioners agreed to receive the report <br /> as presented, to schedule a public hearing on the report to take place on <br /> March 21, 1989 and directed that the EDC Strategic Plan be included on the <br /> Items for Decision Agenda for March 21, 1989. <br /> RECOMMENDATION(S) : Approve the ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIC PLAN, <br /> authorize its implementation by the County, and direct the EDC to request <br /> funding through the County's budget process and other revenue sources. <br />
