He said this chart was completed using only counties that assess a
Solid Waste fee. He said if a county receives funds via the county tax rate, a fee would not
show up in this chart.
Commissioner Price asked if the commissioner approved fee schedule, contained in
the report, is consistent with other counties.
Bob Dick said this is a difficult question to answer definitively as Solid Waste programs
tend to have all sorts of mechanisms and fees assigned. He added that throughout its review,
SCS Enterprises did not see any glaring inefficiencies throughout the entire department's
programs that would warrant a suggestion of improved efficiency.
Commissioner Price asked if there is any particular plan to deal with recycled materials
that are not purchased.
Gayle Wilson said all of their materials are going to market daily in Raleigh, and he said
the County no longer has to pay to have those materials received. He said changes are being
made day-to-day, and a bit of money is being made currently, with the exception of glass.
Commissioner Price asked if there is a way to dispose of glass without a market for it.
Gayle Wilson said there is a market for glass if it is given away. He said it is a difficult
material to run through the machinery, but once it is sorted there is a market, but it is not paid
for.
Commissioner Price said she wanted to insure that the recycling efforts are not in vain.
