2 <br /> • Member of a national youth organization network that advocates for a national scholarship <br /> fund for low-income youth, a national housing trust fund, and strict laws governing predatory <br /> lending that targets low-income communities. <br /> • Assisting a local radio station conduct a holiday toy drive for needy children. <br /> • Assisting the neighborhood association with a petition to the local government for a zoning <br /> ordinance that will help keep single-family housing affordable for families. <br /> • Operating a lawn care service business that employs youth members and generates income <br /> towards the start-up cost for the arcade and entertainment business. <br /> The Director of the YCC, Maxecine Mitchell, has requested funding from the County in the <br /> amount of$1,680 to provide scholarships for three youth and one adult leader to attend a <br /> leadership conference in San Antonio, Texas. The YouthAction's 2"d Annual National <br /> Gathering for Youth Organizing Conference will be held from April 4 -7, 2002. The funding <br /> will cover the registration fee, lodging and airfare. <br /> YouthAction is a national organization that provides resources for building a social change <br /> movement in which young people play an important role in creating and fighting for solutions to <br /> the problems affecting them and their communities. YouthAction works together with <br /> community-based organizations in socially and economically oppressed communities, <br /> specifically with communities of color and low income, to develop their capacity to actively <br /> involve young people in efforts for social, environmental and economic justice. <br /> Maxecine Mitchell will be present to provide additional information and answer questions. <br /> FINANCIAL IMPACT: Funds are available in the non-departmental account reserved for youth <br /> services initiatives. <br /> RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the request for <br /> funding. <br />
