Successful performance helps ensure the safe operation of department vehicles <br />and heavy equipment and contributes to efficient department operations. <br />PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers both higher and lower levels, <br />other county employees, a wide variety of vendors and manufacture representatives, <br />contractors and the general public, <br />PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, provide <br />services, and resolve problems. <br />PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, <br />crouching or stooping, The employee must work in places that are hard <br />to get to and in difficult positions; frequently lifts light and heavy objects; climbs ladders; uses <br />tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity; and must distinguish between shades of <br />color, <br />WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed in an office, shop, and outdoors. The <br />employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating <br />chemicals, foul odors, and inclement weather. The work may require the use of protective <br />devices such as masks, goggles or gloves. <br />SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: This position has direct supervision <br />over Heavy Equipment Mechanic 1 (2) and functional supervision over Landfill Equipment <br />Operator (5), Landfill Inspector (3) and Weighmaster (2) in the absence of the Landfill <br />Operations Manager. <br />MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: <br />o Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized <br />training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school <br />education supplemented by vocational/technical training in mechanical repair or related field <br />and at least two years experience repairing heavy construction equipment or a high school <br />education and at least 4 years experience repairing heavy construction equipment. <br />o Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able <br />to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with two to four years <br />experience. <br />o Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Class A commercial driver's license with a <br />tanker endorsement issued by the State of North Carolina. <br />o Must possess certification in Freon handling. <br />o Must possess or be able to obtain within one year of initial employment, certification as <br />Manager of Landfill Operations or equivalent.
