Operate and maintain aluminum can flattener- <br />blower. Operate and maintain glass crusher. Load outgoing recyclable materials onto van and <br />flatbed trailers. Collect corrugated cardboard from select government buildings. Collect <br />overflow recyclables from Solid Waste Convenience Centers. Perform weekly deep-clean of 24 <br />hour recycling drop-off sites. <br />Position #37 Recycling Materials Handler <br />This employee in this position is required to possess a CDL. Operate and maintain rural curbside <br />recycling collection vehicle, picking tip recyclables from households in unincorporated areas <br />within Orange County. Act as helper on Rural Curbside Recycling route when not driving. <br />Back-up other Solid Waste Collectors performing rural curbside recycling. Help process <br />collected materials when necessary. Deliver collected materials to market as needed using roll- <br />off truck. <br />General Duties for Class Solid Waste Collector Duties <br />Solid Waste Collector Drivers operate vehicles requiring a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) <br />in order to collect recyclable materials from businesses, residences, governmental buildings, and <br />recycling drop-off sites, and to deliver collected materials to processing facility or market. They <br />must be able to operate and maintain a wide variety of commercial vehicles including standard <br />and automatic transmission trucks such as front loading garbage trucks, roll-off trucks, multi- <br />family curb sort trucks, dual-stream curbside collection trucks, box trucks, flat-bed trucks and/or <br />pickups. Solid Waste Collectors must operate equipment and work safely at all times in order to <br />prevent accidents, equipment or property damage, and injury to self or others. They must <br />comply with established safety protocols, and identify and resolve potential safety problems as <br />encountered. When collecting materials Solid Waste Collectors must check for proper <br />preparation, and identify and clean contaminants from recyclables as needed. Collector must <br />sort materials by type as required, and clean up any overflowing materials or materials spilled <br />during collection. Solid Waste Collectors must accurately track and report materials collected <br />and complete daily route sheets as required Collectors must submit weight tickets from scale <br />and markets. <br />Solid Waste Collectors must perform daily vehicle pre and post trip inspections, and are <br />expected to assist in performing needed preventative maintenance on operated vehicles and <br />equipment, including greasing, washing, tire changes, and other minor repairs as required. Solid <br />Waste Collectors assist in maintaining collection containers such as roll-offs, carts, dumpsters, <br />and other recycling receptacles, including signs and labels. <br />Solid Waste Collectors also notify supervisor of program progress, perform customer relations <br />when interacting with citizens, perform other tasks in support of Orange County's waste <br />reduction and recycling efforts as needed and required. <br />Position #28 Solid Waste Collector
