<br /> Certain areas within the township possess unique or exemplary
<br /> natural and physical characteristics that are considered to be of
<br /> great value. This value may not necessarily be economic. It may
<br /> also be educational, biological, cultural, or spiritual.
<br /> One such natural site in Little River Township has been
<br /> identified by the state's Natural Heritage Program. A population
<br /> of the waterplantian spearwort, a plant species of special
<br /> concern, exists along the banks of the South Fork of the Little
<br /> River east of NC 57 . A species of special concern is one that
<br /> fits any of the following criteria: exists in small populations,
<br /> threatened with major habitat loss in Orange County, or is the
<br /> target of exploitation.
<br /> While sites of community and historical significance are sited
<br /> throughout the Township, many are clustered in or near the
