The "right bank" contains single-family residential uses (the
commercial/industrial area lies across the ridge line out of this
watershed) . Only a portion of these houses are on land that
actually flows into the reservoir (see hydrology map) , as many
homes are on land that drains into Little River, downstream of the
impoundment. All of the houses are served with Durham city sewer.
Wastewater (and stormwater) from the "right bank" residential area
is piped out of the watershed via a gravity flow sewer line which
takes the wastewater/stormwater up the shoreline, and through a
ridge cut into another sub-basin. The only sewer pumps on the
"right bank" are basement pumps in some houses which would lift the
wastewater to sewer lines in the streets.
The "left bank" of Treyburn (Phase IV) is undeveloped at this
point, but would also consist of single-family residences that
would use city sewer service. The final map in this enclosure shows
the site plan for this phase of Treyburn.
Wastewater from the "left bank" residential development will also
be piped out of the watershed into the Durham system, via a unique
"double" sewer line. Should a malfunction occur with one sewer
line, the wastewater will be shifted into the second parallel line.
Other backup systems are also in place to help control any
potential system problems. However, the sewer lines on the "left
bank" are not gravity-flow, but are force mains pumped via pump
stations - which would be located in the residential area.
Because of these engineering techniques that keep wastewater and
stormwater from entering the lake, it is the opinion of Durham
staff that there is little impact from Treyburn on the water
quality of Little River Reservoir.
I will bring the large version of the Treyburn hydrology map to the
November 1 meeting in case there are any questions. I hope this
information proves helpful, and please let me know if I can be of
further assistance.
copies: Board of Commissioners
John Link, County Manager
Marvin Collins, Planning Director
,/Beverly Blythe, Clerk to the Board
Gene Bell, Planner III-Comprehensive
Mary Willis, Planner III-Current
Warren Faircloth, Erosion Control Supervisor
Emily Cameron, Planner II - Current
