Our arts programs are an important way that students learn about other cultures. Students
attend Art and Music classes for 45 minutes each week. In Music classes they learn about music through
singing, listening, moving, composing, and playing instruments. Every year a grade level performs a
mini-musical in December where each student presents a speaking part and participates in singing and
moving to the songs in the program. In Art classes students use paint, drawing materials, clay, fibers
and mixed medium. Students also study artists, cultures and types of art.
ii
In our extra-curricular theater program, students have created and produced full-length theatrical
productions for the past five years including "The Jungle Book," "School House Rock," "Charlie &the C'
Chocolate Factory and "The Wizard of Oz" after school, over a three-month period. In 2015, 149 students
participated in the performance of"The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" and this year the school is
performing "The Little Mermaid." 5th graders at CES participate in a 24-hour play festival and get an
intense 24-hour theatrical experience. Students can be either a director or an actor and within 24 hours
they block, costume, prop and rehearse their specific play. This year seven plays were performed. CES
has committed to installing new theater lights this year and has already raised over$4,000 in donations
towards this project.
In 2015/2016, CES had art programming in afterschool clubs where students experienced drumming,
guitar playing, sewing, film, dance, cartooning and crocheting/knitting. An after school club was also
offered called Young Rembrandts (run by an outside group)which teaches students drawing skills. Our
summer programming includes a two-week Summer Theater camp and a Dance Camp run through
Community Schools.
Proposed Use of Grant Funds
Carrboro Elementary School strives to bring diverse performers to our school community with unique
perspectives on multicultural education through music, dance, and storytelling. We are requesting the
assistance of the Orange County Arts Commission to bring two performance groups to CES in 2017 that
we think will have a significant impact on our students.
Mike Wiley is an acclaimed actor and playwright with fifteen years of credits in documentary theatre for
young audiences, plus film, television and regional theatre. Wiley's overriding goal is expanding cultural
awareness for audiences of all ages through dynamic portrayals based on pivotal moments in African-
American history and, in doing so, helping to unveil a richer picture of the total American experience.
See sample work here: htt :/I v ,r aut b .co iw tch`v 0 I O/V N4k
Mike will be performing "Tired Souls"for CES 3rd—5th graders on January 20, 2017 at a cost of$1,020.
"Tired Souls" introduces audiences to Rosa Parks, Jo Ann Robinson, Claudette Colvin and others
instrumental in the Civil Rights Movement, changing the course of U.S. history. CES believes this show
will complement CES December activities commemorating the Montgomery bus boycott, as well as what
students will be learning during Black History month in February.
The other group we would like to bring to our school is the NC Youth Tap Ensemble (NCYTE), one of the
best youth tap ensembles in the world, NCYTE features approximately 40 dancers, ages 8 to 18, who
hail from throughout NC. The NCYTE shows feature rhythmic dance from a variety of genres as well as
