The school began as a community based school and continues in this tradition.
The walk zone is large and the school participates in annual events to support walking and biking to
school. Classes take walking field trips to local businesses and surrounding parks and natural areas.
CES families and staff create inclusive events for the school community such as the Taste of Carrboro,
where families share foods from their diverse cultures and countries, and our popular annual school fair.
CES also has a strong parent organization, RISE (Radical Intervention to Support Education)that brings
people together to discuss race relations and other social issues through Socratic seminars. Group
leaders facilitate discussion groups for both adults and children to discuss an article about race together.
CES takes pride in our exceptional school community and offers a number of distinctive features and
programs including a Dual Language (DL) program and a focus on developmentally appropriate
practices of educating the whole child. The DL program is an English-Spanish immersion program with
the goal of bilingual/biliteracy and multiculturalism by the time students exit elementary school. The
program is fully implemented with 2-3 classes at each grade level PreK-5. Current Kindergartners enter
the program through a magnet model. New to DL classes this year is a bilteracy model which requires
the strategic use of Spanish and English to plan for and enable students to use reading, writing, listening,
P 9 p 9, g 9,
and speaking for a wide range of purposes, in two languages.
In 2016-2017, Carrboro Elementary School is serving approximately 497 students PreK-5 with the
demographics as below for grades K-5.
Subgroup Number % of school population
Total 497 100%
White 278 56%
Black 25 5%
Hispanic 154 31%
American Indian 1 .2%
Asian 14 3%
Multi-Racial 25 5%
ESL (English as 2nd Lang.) 70 14%
EC (Exceptional Children) 35 7%
AIG (Academically& 40 8%
Intellectually Gifted)
EDS (Economically 32 6.4%
Disadvantaged)
Male 244 49%
Female 253 51%
