The questions below are typical of the things students want to 1
know about. You might find these helpful to guide your own discussion 1
after the show. 1
1 Q. What kinds of shows does NCYTE perform, and where? 1
S A. NCYTE performs regularly at school shows like the one 1
1 performed today. The ensemble also performs at dance festivals 1
both in the U.S. and overseas, local arts festivals, retirement 1
1 homes, hospitals, concert series, fund-raising activities and 1
S seasonal events. Each year NCYTE has a show of their own at 1
Sthe Carolina Theatre in Durham, North Carolina. 1
1 Q. Where can someone learn to tap dance? 1
5 A. Classes are usually offered at dance studios that also teach 1
1 ballet, jazz and modern dance. Sometimes the county parks 1
1 and recreation program will offer dance classes. Any type of 1
dance is potentially useful to someone who is interested in 1
5 learning tap. It is also possible to learn on your own. 1
5 [note to teachers: In advance of the performance, you might 1
S familiarize yourself with local options for tap classes, so that you 1
can mention these, as appropriate.] 1
5 Q. Why are there not as many boys in NCYTE as there are girls? j
1 A. In this country, boys don't tend to take dance classes as 1
S often as girls do. This doesn't mean that boys aren't as good as 1
1 girls are at dancing. It does mean that there are fewer boys who 1
audition to be in NCYTE. If you think about it, it used to be that 1
1 girls didn't do much with sports, but this has changed. NCYTE 1
5 hopes that someday more boys will get involved in dance, and 1
1 there will be more boys that audition and join the company. 1
1 Q. Who are some famous tap dancers? 1
5 A. Probably the most well-known tap dancer today is named Savion 1
S Glover. He has a dance company in New York City, and performs all 1
1 over the world. When he was a kid, he appeared regularly on Sesame 1
Street. Other well-known tap dancers include Gregory Hines, Fred 1
Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Gene Kelly, Shirley Temple, Bill "Bojangles" 41
5 Robinson (see additional resources page) .r1
Z ,, l
'
Z North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble-Guide for teachers 6 1
/*,i►,i►.e. ►.e./..r►.r►. ►.•►. ► ►.,."" ese.
