We plan to host two NCYTE shows
for$1,430 on February 16, 2017.
We are asking for$1,000 to help us host these two performance groups in our school's auditorium. The
Carrboro Elementary PTA has raised funds to sponsor similar shows in the past. In the 2015-2010
school year xve hosted the Red Herring Puppets' science based show ''Be(thcitv." K8ir('ebi|in|
"Electricity,"
show"Vamos a Ia Playa," and Didgeridoo Down Under. We typically have artists do two performances in
our auditorium, one for grades K-2 and one for grades 3-5. There are about 240-250 students in each
show. The demographics of the audience is described on page 1 of this application.
CES is well equipped to host these groups. Our school has a performance stage that can easily
accommodate the casts of each group. The administrative staff of our school fully supports our efforts to
bring these groups to our school. Our PTA is prepared to host the events, and the art and music
departments are prepared to help finalize details of the shows and assist performers with technical
issues. Once funding is secure, the PTA will disseminate information to school administrators and
teachers that describes the performances and includes study guides aligned with our curriculum goals.
Both the Mike Wiley and the NCYTE performances closely align with our curriculum objectives at CES.
We adhere to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for guidance in curriculum standards. For
mxamp|e, an essential outcome in the State arts curriculum is K.CR.1 Understand global,
interdisciplinary, and 21st century connections with mmusic, NCYTE's show provides a connection
with the music curriculum as well as social studies found in considerations of the different types of music
featured in the performance (e.g. blues, classical, bluegrass, old-time, folk, Latin, jazz). These music
traditions have historical perspectives and some have a specific geographic identification. Can the
students recognize these types of music or the composers? Do they know the historical roots?
The Mike Wiley performance will work well with the NC Social Studies Standards. In particular, 3.H.2
Use historical thinking skills to understand the context of events, people and places. The Mike
Wiley performance is a study of historical events (the Civil Rights Movement)through the eyes of several
different key characters. Students will begin to understand the significant role of the individual in shaping
history and explore changes in communities and regions over time. Another standard that will work well
with Mike Wiley's narrative performance is the encouragement of teachers to guide students in drawing
parallels between contemporary issues and their historical origins.
Carrboro Elementary is pleased to have the opportunity to apply for funding that would facilitate bringing
these exciting performance artists to our school. The lives of our students and their families will certainly
be enriched by students getting a chance to expand their knowledge of the world through arts
programming. The Parent Teacher Association of CES is prepared to raise the matching funds if we
were to be awarded monies from the Orange County Arts Commission.
